TSPS App Reviews

Over the past thirty years, high technology has overtaken the age-old skills of the the navigator. Sadly, sextants now are more often sold as ornaments than as the vital piece of sea-going equipment they once were. Now, GPS, WiFi, and 3G receivers are available to anyone and can be used for offshore and coastal boating, making it much easier to avoid dangers to navigation and return safely to port. Unlike, the sextant, which requires clear skies and complicated mathematical calculations to be of any use, dedicated electronics like smartphones and tablets display all the vital information necessary to know where you are on the water and what’s around you.

When it comes to boating, many TSPS members are dedicated technology geeks. It’s not uncommon to see someone staring into a smartphone or tablet when the boat is underway. Through these devices, crew have access to navigation, AIS, weather, marina, tidal information and much much more. Apps are often a hot topic aboard, as crew often give short demos to one another of new apps they’ve found, and so we are encouraging members to share their views with a wider audience by submitting a review or opinion on a device or app that you have tried out.
